Character Makeover: Josie, Valerie and Melody, Part I.

The Daily Geekette

Welcome to the third installment of my 1920s Josie and the Pussycats makeover series! If you’re interested, the overall synopsis of my endeavor can be found here. Previously, antagonist Alexandra’s flapper-inspired makeover was revealed last August, and the group’s dudes, manager Alexander’s and roadie Alan’s, duds were transformed in September. At long last, it’s Josie, Valerie, and Melody’s turn,  but I’m doing to do something a little different this time around.

Roadie Alan, antagonist Alexandra, kitty Sebastian and wannabe swell Alexander in their 1920's styles. Roadie Alan, antagonist Alexandra, kitty Sebastian and wannabe swell Alexander in their 1920’s styles.

“Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.”
~ Mark Twain

One of the most fun things about working on a show is trying on your costume for the first time.  You’ve rehearsed your blocking and practiced your lines and sung your songs, but once you step into your character’s clothes… it just makes everything seem a bit more real!

As an actor, your costume is so important.  It tells the audience the story of your character.  It adds to the mood of the piece.  It contributes to the overall look of the show.  As such, there are some important rules that you must respect when it comes to your costume.

1.  Once your measurements are taken, you need to stay the same size.

There’s nothing worse for a costume designer than to spend hours sewing a costume, and then come back to rehearsal and…

Fashion, costume and historical garb: Museum exhibits for every clotheshorse!

The Daily Geekette

I could wander at length around most museums,  finding endless, personal, and silent entertainment in what is on view. Personally, a great collection or exhibit has the ability to both exhilarate and to exhaust the mind; the inspiration I glean is abundant and utterly gratifying in the most sublime of manners.

There happen to be an amazing array of fashion and historic costume-inspired exhibits that are currently on view, or are slated for dates within the next year. Keep on reading to discover a few of the gems that I am really excited about!

Good movies, great costumes!

The Daily Geekette

Costuming is a silent, visual and psychological force when you’re watching something, be it in a movie, a  television show or on stage at a theatre. Along with the other technical aspects of a production, costuming is a necessary, integral part of a person’s viewing experience, as it helps do things like set the time period, location and mood of whatever it is you’re watching. Costumes can also give the viewer clues as to who the characters are, what their occupations may be, and can even influence how we feel toward certain characters, depending upon color, fabric and garment choices.

Below are some of my favorite films not only because I love the stories themselves, but because I also really admire the work that went into their costume design!

Random costume sketches. Random costume sketches.

Knitting Is A Right, Not A Privilege

Work Even

my inspiration my inspiration

An article has been circulating that has fueled a lot of discussion among knitters, entitled “Never Say This To a Knitter. Really, Just Don’t Do It.” What exactly are you never supposed to say to a knitter? You might think it’s a remark about him/her having too much time on their hands, or an ageist joke about who, stereotypically, is “supposed” to knit. It’s neither of those. The author, Anne Miller, argues—and many knitters agree—that the comment she least wants to hear (and does hear, often) is “You should sell your knitting!”

The first thing I noticed is that the article was published by Yahoo! Makers, which is apparently a thing that exists (neat, I guess). The headline is classic clickbait, designed to compel and stir up discussion. But the article’s thesis, that knitters are tired of hearing well-intentioned randos insist that they should commodify their craft, is…
